Roomba Error 14 — Bin not detected
DIRECT ANSWER
COMMON CAUSES · RANKED
Bin not seated correctly MOST COMMON
The bin looks installed but never clicked in fully — the detection switch stays open.
Dirty bin contacts
A thin layer of carbon dust on the metal contacts is enough to block the detection signal.
Missing or loose filter
On i, j and s series the bin won't register if the filter is out or badly seated.
Faulty bin-detect sensor or damaged bin RARE
Usually after a drop or washing the bin's electronics. Fix is a replacement bin.
HOW TO FIX IT
Reseat the bin
Remove the bin, then reinstall it until it clicks. Press CLEAN.
Clean the bin contacts
Wipe the metal contacts on both the bin and the robot with a lightly dampened melamine foam (e.g. Magic Eraser). Let them dry before reinstalling.
Check the filter
Make sure the bin is empty and the filter is properly installed — a loose filter alone can trigger Error 14.
Reboot the robot
Press and hold CLEAN until you hear the reboot tone, then release and retry.
Still failing? Replace the bin
If Error 14 persists after a reboot, the bin or its detection sensor is likely faulty — see compatible parts below.
